Mountaineer Heritage Season Opens January 9

One of the best things about hunting in West Virginia is not having to wait long after the new year for a big game season. If you're as ready to get back into the woods as we are, then mark your calendars for the start of Mountaineer Heritage Season on January 9. You don't want to miss it!

This four-day season provides a unique opportunity to hunt deer and bear using primitive weapons, such as percussion side lock and flintlock rifles and pistols or long and recurve bows. Just make sure you have a 2020 hunting license before you go, and purchase a Class DS stamp if you want to hunt bear. Licenses and stamps are available online at www.wvhunt.com.

Need a license or stamps? Get them today before it's too late.

The Mountaineer Heritage Season lasts until January 12 and is the last big game hunting opportunity until April. Here's what you need to know:

  1. The season is open statewide. Only long and recurve bows are legal in Logan, McDowell, Mingo and Wyoming counties.
  2. You must wear a blaze-orange outer garment of at least 400 square inches, unless you are hunting in Logan, McDowell, Mingo or Wyoming counties.
  3. You can take either a buck or doe during the season, but cannot take more than three antlered deer during the regular and Mountaineer Heritage Seasons combined.
  4. You can take one black bear during the season, but it won't count toward your annual bear season bag limit.
